He recalls his childhood in a small village where he was told he was a genius, a belief fueled by a village elder and a one-legged mercenary. Driven by a minstrel's song about a 'Knight of Twilight,' Encrid pursued knighthood but realized his lack of talent after being defeated by a twelve-year-old prodigy. Despite his mediocrity, he persevered through years as a mercenary before joining the military as a Decurion in the Cyprus Division of the Kingdom of Naurillia. Now thirty, Encrid leads the '444 Squad,' a group of misfits. On a heavy, ominous morning, he shares a mundane breakfast and conversation about his childhood dreams with his skilled, nonchalant subordinate. As the sun sets, the army is called to assemble for a skirmish. Encrid, carrying a talisman from his mercenary days, joins the charge into a bloody, pitched battle alongside his squad.
