The peace is shattered by a long, sustained whistle signal indicating an enemy attack. Elite soldiers from the Aspen Duchy, specifically the Gray Hounds, launch a sudden ambush. Mitch Hurrier, an Aspen commander whom Encrid had previously wounded, leads the assault. Despite Encrid's efforts, his injured right wrist fails him during a clash with Mitch. Vengeance attempts to intervene by thrusting a spear at Mitch's back, but Mitch skillfully dodges and executes a lethal strike, decapitating Vengeance. Mitch then turns his attention to Encrid, stabbing him through the heart. As Encrid dies, he experiences the familiar, maddening sensation of death. He awakens once more in his bed, realizing he has looped back to the morning. He notes his right wrist is still injured and realizes the ambush by Mitch Hurrier is imminent, forcing him to contemplate how to break the cycle.
