Returning to the unit, Encrid spars with Rem, who expresses frustration regarding his cooking skills. Later that evening, Audin Pumrei invites Encrid on a night patrol. During the patrol, Audin delivers a sermon about the importance of moderate effort over overexertion. The peaceful walk is interrupted when a high-level magical beast, a Manticore, appears on the city wall. While a nearby soldier is paralyzed by the beast's roar, Audin remains calm and engages the creature. Using a perfect dodge and a counterattack, Audin strikes the Manticore's jaw. Encrid observes the combat, noting how Audin's movements align with the swordsmanship techniques he has been learning. The chapter ends with Audin scolding the wounded Manticore as if it were a misbehaving child.
