Encrid decides that his loyalty to his current companions and his own personal convictions regarding honor, justice, and conviction are more important than joining an established order. As Encrid makes his decision, his companions—Rem, Audin, Ragna, Jaxon, Dunbachel, and Finn—emerge from the quarters to support him, with some jokingly or seriously protesting the idea of him leaving. The Rapier Swordsman, accepting Encrid's refusal, offers advice regarding the dangers of the Swift Blade and the importance of not overusing 'Will' before departing. Following the swordsman's exit, Encrid and Rem engage in a friendly duel in the rain, which Rem wins by using a broken axe blade as a decoy. After the duel, the two realize they are both too poor to replace broken equipment and contemplate bothering Krais. The night is interrupted when a soldier arrives at the barracks to report that trouble has broken out. Meanwhile, the Rapier Swordsman and his subordinates depart, heading back toward the Empire after the swordsman acknowledges Encrid's unique talent.
