The soldier explains that the Grateful Forest is named such because of its abundance, unlike the uninhabitable Cliff Forest to the north. During the patrol, they encounter a horse beast and several human-faced dogs. Torres commands his men to kill the beasts, successfully killing several before the horse beast flees. Torres reports the incident to the Castle Lord and discusses security with Zimmer, deciding to let eastern deserters go to avoid future conflict. Days later, a Border Guard unit arrives to assist Martai with beast extermination. Among them is Dunbachel, a golden-eyed beastwoman and former member of Encrid's Black Blade Bandits. As they approach the forest, Dunbachel experiences a flashback of her brutal training under Rem, who taught her to survive by stealing and mastering movements through intense physical combat. Upon arriving at the Grateful Forest, Dunbachel's instincts sense extreme danger. Instead of the dozen beasts reported, she spots a massive horde of over twenty horse beasts and countless human-faced dogs with glowing red eyes. Realizing the situation is far more dire than the mission briefing suggested, Dunbachel strikes the guide soldier to force him to run for reinforcements. Channeling the survival instincts instilled by Rem, Dunbachel draws her scimitar and charges into the fray to face the overwhelming numbers alone.
