Following a plan devised by Krais Allman, Encrid's party ambushes a group of mercenaries and a corrupt priest sent by the Black Blade. The battle is overwhelmingly one-sided. Rem demonstrates incredible speed, severing a mercenary's neck with an axe, while Dunbachel uses rapid movements to evade a spear and kill her attacker. Teresa the Wanderer uses her shield and sword to crush a female mercenary's skull. Torres offers the surviving mercenaries a chance to serve the territory, leading some to surrender. Meanwhile, Krais's orchestrated trap leads the fat priest into an encounter with Audin Pumrei. Audin, having found new conviction through his experiences, executes the priest by striking his head with his palm. Ragna Zaun also joins the fray, showcasing his impressive new dwarven sword. The battle ends quickly, leaving Jaxon to capture a wounded mercenary for unknown purposes. After cleaning up the battlefield, the group returns to the Border Guard. Encrid fulfills his duties as Training Company Commander, much to the joy of the soldiers who were dreading his return. After a night of rest and a sparring match between Encrid and Teresa, the next morning brings an urgent visit from Gilpin, who is accompanied by the Fairy Company Commander.
