Esther confronts Kaisela, a village terrorizer, using powerful magic to dismantle her spells. When Kaisela attempts to stab Esther with a hidden dagger, Esther breaks her wrist with panther-like strength and subsequently kills her by plunging the dagger into her heart. Encrid intervenes to stop a crossbowman, causing the remaining bandits to surrender. The Fairy Company Commander's unit arrives, led by a confused and intimidated Platoon Leader. Esther engages in a chilling, somewhat socially awkward exchange with the Platoon Leader, threatening to pluck out his eyes before Encrid directs the soldiers to tie up the bandits. Encrid and Esther then investigate the village chief's house, sensing magic. They descend into a massive underground tunnel system where they find a scene of horrific carnage: drugged, insane victims, a dead child, and failed human-monster experiments. They discover the survivors are being held in barred areas. The group encounters the renowned alchemist Laban, who is responsible for the experiments. Laban claims he was forced into these actions by the Black Blade. As the group observes the atrocities, Encrid stares into Laban's eyes, finding no trace of guilt in the alchemist's decayed gaze.
