He uses the time before dawn to reflect on his goals, specifically his desire to protect Oara and her vow to always smile. Encrid prepares for battle and joins the fray, moving through the city with Rem and Luagarne. He seeks out Roman, a Junior-Knight, to learn how to perform a specific strike. Despite Roman's frustration and the chaos of the monster wave—which includes trolls, spiders, and owlbears—Encrid relentlessly demands instruction. His obsessive behavior, characterized by asking for techniques while actively killing monsters, provides an unexpected morale boost to the defenders, including Oara and Dunbachel. Roman eventually explains that a Knight's strike is about imbuing the entire body and every minute movement with Will. Encrid realizes that he cannot simply mimic a Knight's technique because every Knight's path is unique. He commits to a grueling process of repetition to master this concept. Through 162 more repetitions of the day, Encrid eventually reaches a level of understanding where his body can respond to the concept of controlling Will through every muscle, from his fingers to his toes, much to Roman's surprise.
