She eventually reaches the eastern frontier city and meets the Mercenary King, Anu, who is annoyed by Encrid's lack of response to his letters. Dunbachel tells Anu she has come to the East to rest, much to the surprise of the King's attendants. Meanwhile, Krang meets with the Marquis of Octo and Marcus Visar to discuss political tensions. They discuss the growing power of the Royal Family and the growing threat of war from Aspen, which they suspect is preparing for an attack. They also address complaints from provincial nobles regarding Encrid's expanding influence and the management of Count Molsen's land. Krang notes that Encrid has not replied to his many letters. Encrid, having returned from the West, reviews a mountain of correspondence, including marriage proposals and provocations. He decides to visit a troublesome noble who has been sending assassins and claiming parts of Count Molsen's land. Accompanied by Rem, Encrid travels to the noble's territory. Upon arrival, they encounter the noble, who is out hunting monsters with his son and attendants.
