Following the defeat of Varna, Corwin flees the battlefield in a state of panic. He encounters a Commander who is also retreating; the Commander, feeling guilty for his own cowardice, lashes out at Corwin for deserting. In a fit of mental instability, Corwin murders the Commander to silence him and escapes toward the main Aspen army. Upon reaching the camp, Corwin uses his status as a Royal Knight and a symbolic dagger to seize control of the command tent. He murders the General and a loyal adjutant, then coerces an ambitious adjutant into ordering a full-scale, suicidal advance against the enemy. Corwin's plan is to use the frontal assault as bait to target Graham, the Lord of the Border Guard. As the Aspen army launches this senseless, uncoordinated charge, Kreise Allman watches in bewilderment, realizing that the battlefield is about to descend into a senseless massacre driven by madness rather than strategy.
