Moving deeper, they encounter a former acquaintance—a greedy bounty hunter who had previously tried to betray Encrid. This man had murdered his own teammates to claim their bounties. Encrid executes the man with a single, precise sword strike and then kills the two remaining hunters who attempt to flee. As they continue, they encounter various hunters who provide information, noting that the saintess's tracks seem suspiciously scarce. Encrid and Shinar realize the tracks are too clean, leading to the conclusion that the saintess has intentionally deceived her pursuers by leading them on a false trail. Encrid decides to backtrack the movements of the saintess to find her true path.
