Encrid reflects on his repetitive existence, deciding to move forward rather than settle into the safety of a loop. After a successful gambling session where he used his knowledge of dice to win, he is approached by Krais, who suspects Encrid is trying to impress the incoming female battalion commander with flowers. Krais fetches Encrid a bundle containing throwing knives, a single deer leather glove, dried white campions, and rice. Encrid then heads to the outskirts of the barracks to hunt snakes using rice as bait. He successfully catches five snakes and brings them to a skilled, booze-loving squad leader. Encrid trades the snakes to the squad leader in exchange for custom leather armor—gloves and limb guards—using the promise of snake liquor as leverage. Finally, Encrid retreats to a grove to prepare a specialized substance by crushing white moonflowers and mixing them with the collected snake venom. As he finishes the preparation, a loud scream echoes through the camp, signaling the assembly for combat orders.
