Grateful for the instruction, Yeon Sowol gives Jo Manseok a tael of silver and receives two gifts in return: a personalized sachet and the <Shinheung Danger-Avoidance Manual>. The manual contains eerie survival rules for the county, including avoiding alcohol-fogged streets, fleeing from children in silk who are not wealthy, never disturbing Cheongun Pavilion attendants, fleeing Heavenly Road Mountain if someone sits idly in the grass, and the critical rule regarding the Shinheung Three Dogs: do not make eye contact with the third person if the middle person frowns and the left grins. Jo Manseok explains that the third individual, Mad Dog, is a suspected serial killer protected by political ties to the Severing Sword Sect and White Dragon Gang. Although Yeon Sowol was skeptical of the ghost-story-like warnings, he accepts the manual as a vital guide for a Jianghu member. Upon leaving, Yeon Sowol immediately encounters the trio described in rule five. He recognizes the frowning middle figure and the grinning left figure, identifying the third as Mad Dog. Despite the warning, Yeon Sowol chooses to stare directly at Mad Dog without looking away. Mad Dog, noticing the intense gaze, turns to stare back, his face flushing bright red as their eyes lock in a tense standoff.
