Chapter 23 — Dropped into Murim with an Instant Kill Skill
Chapter 23
Shin Jae-eon, Leader of the Severing Sword Sect, reflects on his strict cultivation doctrine emphasizing the 'Breathing Smoke into Clouds' stage and a subsequent year of intense training. His first two disciples, Seong Bumyeong and Ha Inso, succeeded in building first-rate foundations, while two others died from internal injuries after lapses in concentration. A fifth disciple, Gi Hyeonseung, succeeded but lagged in comparison to Yeon So-wol’s peers. Shin Jae-eon’s sixth disciple, his son, suffered severe burns from qi instability and committed suicide two weeks later. Overcome by trauma and guilt, Shin Jae-eon abandoned the brutal method, opting for a safer, slower approach for his seventh disciple, Jeon Taegwang (Resentful Dog). Jeon Taegwang, enraged by Shin Jae-eon’s critique of his stage of maturity, attacks Yeon So-wol. Yeon So-wol effortlessly evades him using Windborne Drift, leaping onto rooftops and demonstrating superior lightness skill mastery. The Shinheung Three Dogs chase him through the streets, causing collateral damage. Yeon So-wol, tiring from the pursuit, seeks refuge in a building, only to realize he has entered Cheongun Pavilion, a high-class pleasure house bound by strict Black Path taboos regarding disturbance and compensation. Inside, he is ambushed by an invisible blade held by Eun-yeong. Choran intervenes, confirming Yeon So-wol’s identity as Yi Yu-baek’s foster son and cooling the situation. Yeon So-wol observes Eun-yeong’s unique qi output, noting its depth, while Choran reveals the dangerous protocols of Cheongun Pavilion, warning that failure to apologize and compensate for a disturbance results in lethal pursuit. The chapter ends with Yeon So-wol apprehensive, aware that his presence has triggered a life-threatening obligation.
