J3 reveals he has been observing the researchers in the subway, acting more as a watcher than a protector. Inside, the peaceful backyard has been replaced by pitch-black darkness. Soleum encounters the Counselor, who attempts to interrogate her about what she saw. Soleum counters by accusing him of using his counseling persona to hide his true nature and his impulse to protect clients by isolating them. She reveals she is imitating him, specifically the version of him that counseled her when she was contaminated. Soleum realizes the truth behind his high honorifics and his behavior during their previous encounter: the small fox she saw was an avatar sent by him to help her escape. She concludes that they were separated by different timelines—he returning to his cycle and she waking up recently.
