Waking up in a cramped worker breakroom in a trashed physical state, Kim Soleum (Worker Z999) observes a stiff corpse at the end of the room. Morning announcements signal roll call. As workers emerge, Kim notes the presence of a strict hierarchy: X-Group workers are in better condition, while Y and Z groups face mistreatment and contamination symptoms like mumbling or hair being half-burnt. Kim identifies several workers from a previous encounter (X145, X141) who behave arrogantly. During roll call, Kim approaches a featureless Security Team staff member in a hazmat suit to report the death of the previous occupant (Z993). The staff member indifferently points Kim toward a notice stating that medical services must be purchased with cash. Following the roll call, Kim is blindfolded, transported via minecart to a humid, dilapidated facility, and fitted with a locking arm guard. Kim is shoved into a dark containment cell and finds a wooden doll on a chair, marked by burn scars. Kim recalls the diary's warning that the previous worker's task involved setting the doll on fire. A researcher's voice via intercom commands Kim to hit the doll instead of burning it, threatening a points penalty if instructions are not followed. Kim approaches the doll and strikes it.
