Chapter 144

The narrator, the Undertaker, and Noh Do-hwa arrive on the idyllic beaches of Saipan. The Undertaker, dressed as a cafe barista and Do-hwa in a lab coat, stand out against the resort backdrop. Seeking to amplify their misfortune to counteract luck, the Undertaker decides to summon anomalies by exploiting the island's dark history. He takes Do-hwa to Banzai Cliff, explaining its connection to the Japanese Imperial Army's mass suicides and Osamu Dazai’s suicide. He recites from Dazai’s 'No Longer Human,' acting as the 'Man' element, while the cliff ('Earth') and the Emperor worship ('Heaven') complete the triad. This incantation summons shadowy figures of soldiers chanting 'Long live the Emperor' who dive off the cliff. The Undertaker demonstrates that this anomaly-summoning technique works like a systematic magic; later, he instructs Do-hwa to chant, which successfully reproduces the spectral figures, confirming that any person can trigger anomalies if the conditions of Heaven, Earth, and Man are met. While Do-hwa crafts a prosthetic leg for the Undertaker’s missing limb, the two observe the endless loop of shadowy figures representing the 'Battle of Saipan.' The scene shifts to show the Undertaker’s ongoing conflict with the Monkey’s Paw, an entity governing luck and misfortune. The Paw attempts to force a 'depressing story' narrative where former comrades regret their past betrayals and the Undertaker rejects them, thus denying him the satisfaction of revenge. However, the Undertaker subverts this by choosing to be a 'forgiving' protagonist, absolving Cheon Yo-hwa of her past crimes when she apologizes. This strategic forgiveness starves the Monkey’s Paw of the expected tragic resolution. To further defy the Paw’s luck-bestowing attempts, the Undertaker systematically donates his limbs: his right leg to Dang Seo-rin, his left arm to the Saintess, and his right arm to Lee Ha-yul. This self-mutilation, completed by Do-hwa’s prosthetics, creates an 'Undertaker Daruma doll,' causing the Monkey’s Paw to collapse in frustration as its attempts to grant happiness are constantly converted into misfortune. As the 590th cycle nears its end, the Japanese archipelago is obliterated. From Saipan, the Undertaker observes a massive tower of 'red flesh' rising in the direction of Tokyo, identifying it as Go Yuri, signaling a new catastrophic event as the cycle concludes.
