Chapter 179 — I'm an Infinite Regressor, But I've Got Stories to Tell
Chapter 179
The Undertaker narrates from the perspective of Cycle 239, a time when he had not yet crossed the Pacific or encountered the Super Monsoon anomaly. He reflects on the dangers of electronic devices in the Void, noting that they are contaminated and can cause heart attacks, which necessitates manual vital sign monitoring. The narrative shifts to an emergency at the National Road Management Corps headquarters, where Noh Do-hwa, the Corps Leader, is confronted by a patient who has lost his heart, all four limbs, and suffered severe trauma. The patient, identified later as Ah Reum, had killed the heart of the 'Code of Hammurabi' anomaly near Gimhae in exchange for his own life. With the help of the Undertaker, who maintains the patient's circulation through aura, Noh Do-hwa performs a complex surgery to implant an artificial heart. After successfully stabilizing the patient and gradually reducing the aura support, Ah Reum regains consciousness and thanks them before leaving. One month later, Ah Reum returns, having lost his left brain and other limbs after another encounter with a Basilisk. Despite Noh Do-hwa’s exhaustion and complaints about workload, she agrees to operate, replacing the lost brain hemisphere. Two months after that, Ah Reum returns once more, this time with his right brain missing. Noh Do-hwa reluctantly agrees to the unprecedented procedure of replacing both hemispheres with prosthetics. The surgery is successful, and Ah Reum wakes up, confirming his identity as Ah Reum. However, when the Undertaker questions the philosophical continuity of his identity, Ah Reum begins to suffer a dissociative episode, questioning his own existence across time. This moment marks the birth of a new anomaly in the world.
