Chapter 167 — Regression Is Too Much

Chapter 167

Kim Jun-ho enters Floor 15, a surreal black mountain floating in an ocean of lava under a dark sky with a visible sun. He climbs to the summit and finds a pit containing a single, deeply wrinkled elder carving tiny stone figurines. The elder, who claims to be a caretaker and helper rather than a god or archangel, offers Jun-ho a choice of rewards for clearing the floor. Jun-ho, suspicious of the lack of a trial, questions the elder's motives and the nature of the floors. The elder explains that Floors 11 through 15 were designed to help climbers grow stronger and provides safety nets to ensure floors are never permanently impossible to clear. Jun-ho chooses the lowest-value reward, the Elder's Wise Counsel, and asks about hidden routes on Floors 13 and 14. The elder confirms minor progression changes but no major hidden rewards, then dismisses Jun-ho through a portal. Upon returning to reality, Jun-ho finds Choi Ji-won urgently calling him over to look at her phone, which displays a secret message from Michael Zetter requesting her contact.
