Chapter 18 — The Tale of Cultivation and Demon Extermination

Chapter 18

Chapter 18 opens with the sparring exam between Ise and Hae Unchan on the training ground before Hall Masters. The examiner calls the two boys forward and signals the match to begin. Hae Unchan attacks first with swift, textbook sword techniques, while Ise relies on Dokkaebi Steps and his shield to evade and counter. Their exchange grows fierce, with both trading blows and spiritual energy attacks. Ise eventually lands a decisive shield strike to Hae Unchan's head, knocking him down. After a grueling back-and-forth battle of attrition where both run dry on spiritual energy, Ise delivers a final blow enhanced by demonic qi, defeating Hae Unchan. The examiner declares Ise the winner. Following the match, Kang I-tae privately summons Ise and offers him three pieces of advice: avoid Hall Master recruitment until Foundation Establishment, deflect vague promises with non-committal words, and watch his conduct since Gwisu Temple's vouch does not erase the Chief Examiner's suspicions about his demonic qi. Ise accepts the counsel respectfully.
