In this chapter, Ise and Seolryeong are investigating the Bamboo-Tube Beauty (Geuma), a guardian spirit who appears before them pleading for help. She recounts her backstory: for three hundred years she lived alone on Immortal Mountain until a wandering scholar named her and spent an hour each day teaching her letters, composing poems, and singing. She fell in love with his kindness and followed him north when he returned home, giving him her spirituality to restore his health. For seven years she knew happiness, but after fifty years of waiting alone, her spirituality ran dry and resentment drove her toward corruption. She now flowers—a sign she will soon become a full demon. Seolryeong argues they should help her rather than simply exorcise her, invoking the Daoist path of righteousness. Ise agrees to a seven-day search for the scholar, then reports to the Order. Geuma reveals her final hope is to hear the name the scholar gave her, which only he can call. Ise promises to save her strength and avoid ordinary people, vowing to perform a spirit-sending rite if she becomes a demon.
