Ise follows an unfamiliar food scent through a cultivators' market street to the West Lake Immortal Cuisine Restaurant, where the owner serves him red-braised pork, Dongpo pork, and Yangchun noodles. He pays and continues to the spirit-artifact shops, needing a flying artifact. Along the way he buys a jade ring for his master and pockets a spiritual herb from a mortals' apothecary. At the West Lake Guild he encounters Hui-dan, a one-star official from the External Affairs Pavilion, who has been caring for the orphan boy Giwon, moving them into safer lodging within the guild. Hui-dan asks Ise to consider joining the West Lake Guild, but he declines, saying he will soon leave for another region. Ise finally finds the White Luan Boat, a flying spirit artifact shaped like a white bird, and after the shopkeeper demonstrates its divine-sense control, he sets off southward across the Zheng Empire toward the Great Exorcist Order headquarters. Suddenly an immense divine sense engulfs him; a white-haired old man, calling himself an elder protector of the empire, stops his flight and accuses him of being a Great Exorcist Order spy, leaving Ise to wonder whether he can survive.
