Before departing from the garrison, Finn advises Encrid and Torres to travel light to facilitate climbing the wall. After traversing a rocky mountain, the trio arrives at the wall under the light of dual moons. Finn reveals her plan to exploit the guards' complacency during bright nights, noting the low number of sentries. Using chalk and spikes to aid their ascent, Encrid and Torres struggle through the physically demanding climb. Upon reaching the top, they are immediately intercepted by a wizard with snake-like eyes who uses magic to ignite torches and deploy a transparent barrier. Encrid's daggers and a subsequent axe throw from the wizard are neutralized by the barrier. As Finn and Torres jump from the wall to escape, Encrid attempts a close-range strike on the wizard. However, he is caught off guard by a magical thorny vine that pierces his neck. The wizard identifies herself as Resha of the Thorny Rose. The chapter concludes with Encrid waking up on the third day, having survived the encounter, and inquiring about a third method to cross the wall.
