Encrid and his unit, including Finn and Torres, decide to disguise themselves as a caravan to enter the Cross Guard. While camping in a dugout, Encrid experiences a moment of martial enlightenment; by relaxing his tense shoulders and focusing on fluid movement rather than desperate struggle, he achieves a perfect, effortless sword stroke. This realization brings him immense joy and a sense of progress. As night falls under the light of the dual moons, the camp is suddenly ambushed by a large pack of over twenty werewolves, likely coordinated by a wizard's magic which masked their approach. The battle is brutal and overwhelming. Encrid manages to kill several werewolves and wound the one-eyed leader, but the unit is decimated. Torres and Finn are killed in the fray, and Encrid is eventually swarmed and torn apart by six werewolves. Upon his death, Encrid awakens once again at the black river, facing the Ferryman in a small boat.
