While recovering in the infirmary, Encrid is confronted by Vengeance, a squad leader who is visibly irritated by Encrid's casual attitude. Their bickering is interrupted by the arrival of the company commander, a fairy woman with a dry, commanding presence. She questions Encrid about his survival against Frog and his performance on the battlefield. During the encounter, a soldier named Krang (who appears to be using a pseudonym) introduces himself to the commander. After the commander departs, Encrid focuses on physical conditioning, specifically grip strength, to prepare for future battles. Krang engages Encrid in a philosophical conversation about his aspirations; when Encrid states his goal is to become a knight, Krang accepts the dream with unexpected gravity. A week passes, and Encrid's injuries heal. However, upon waking up, Encrid realizes he is experiencing a time loop. He recognizes the bard's singing and Vengeance's complaints as identical to the previous day, leading him to conclude that he died in his sleep and has reset to the start of the loop.
