Before departing on a scout mission, Encrid receives training from Jaxon on how to use heightened hearing to detect anomalies in the environment, such as the sound of rustling grass. Jaxon notes that while Encrid has an impressive hearing range, his ability to distinguish specific sounds is still at a novice level. After the watch, Jaxon interacts with Rem, who teases him about his helpfulness toward Encrid. The scout team, led by an arrogant and impulsive squad leader, sets out across the Green Pearl grasslands. The squad leader's incompetence is immediately evident when he mistakes gazelle tracks for nu tracks and threatens the team with a barbecue. Encrid forms a brief camaraderie with Enri, a hunter-turned-soldier, who teaches him how to spot animal trails. As the mission progresses, the squad leader's reckless behavior continues when he decides to cut through a field of tall weeds to track enemy scouts, a move Encrid considers highly dangerous and foolish. Encrid decides to observe the situation and see if the squad leader's recklessness leads to disaster or if they simply return empty-handed.
