While traversing the Tall Grass Meadow, Enri points out unusual patterns in the grass and a lack of animal dung, suggesting something is amiss. Encrid observes the environment, reflecting on the repetitive nature of his current existence. A soldier accompanying the squad leader apologizes for the squad leader's immature behavior, which Encrid accepts to maintain focus on the mission. Suddenly, the scout squad is ambushed by enemy soldiers using crossbows and spears. An arrow kills the soldier at the front, and Encrid shouts for everyone to get down. To create an opening, Encrid charges through a volley of bolts, taking a hit to his shoulder but successfully engaging the enemy. Using a combination of his arming sword and a captured spear, Encrid kills three enemy soldiers in rapid succession through precise, brutal movements. Despite his impressive combat skills, the squad is severely depleted, with only four scouts remaining against over twenty enemy soldiers from Aspen. Realizing they are outnumbered and facing heavy crossbow fire, Encrid orders a tactical retreat.
