Using his superior strength and a cracked sword, Encrid parries the strike and thrusts his sword into Mitch's chest, wounding him severely. As Encrid prepares to finish the fight, a mustached soldier intervenes to protect the wounded Mitch, and other soldiers use medicine to stabilize him. Encrid ignores the distraction and focuses on his primary objective: destroying the flagpole to dissipate the fog. He weaves through enemy lines, dodging quarrels and spears, and uses a combination of throwing knives and a thrown spear to tear the flag. The destruction of the flag causes the fog to dissipate. The chapter ends with Encrid facing a furious mustached soldier and a sorcerer, prepared to fight for his survival with a fifty-fifty chance of success.
