While on market patrol in the border city of Naurillia, Encrid is accompanied by soldiers Jack and Bo. During their patrol, they engage in casual conversation, with Jack challenging Encrid to a spar. As they enter the market, a child in rags suddenly falls toward Encrid, but the child is actually a half-blood fairy assassin. The fairy stabs Encrid in the abdomen and heart, while Jack and Bo—revealed to be accomplices—hold Encrid still. The assassin, part of an independent company from Aspen known as 'A Persistent Lover,' mocks Encrid before fleeing. As Encrid bleeds out, he realizes Jack, Bo, and another soldier named Rotten were part of a conspiracy to avoid dangerous scouting missions. Encrid dies as a passing maid screams at the sight of the blood. Encrid suddenly wakes up in his barracks, realizing he has regressed in time. He is in his squad with Rem, Big Eyes, and Audin Pumrei. To prepare for the upcoming duty, Encrid asks Audin to teach him a barehanded training method designed to prevent body stiffness in the cold. After training, Encrid returns to the market for his patrol. Anticipating the assassination, he attempts to strike Jack and Bo, but the half-blood fairy moves with incredible speed, throwing a double-sided blade that embeds itself near Encrid's heart. As the fairy whispers that a persistent lover never forgets their prey, Encrid prepares himself for the cycle to begin again.
