Jaxon returns and, after Encrid describes a unique throwing weapon, identifies it as a 'Whistling Knife'—a lethal assassination tool. Encrid's blue-eyed panther, Big Eyes, remains wary of the group. As Encrid heads to duty, he is accompanied by Jack and Bo, who attempt to lighten the mood with excessive praise. At the market, a ragged man attacks, and Encrid uses Bo as a human shield to defend himself. However, the half-fairy assassin, revealed to be a master of Whistling Knives, strikes with incredible speed, piercing Bo's heart and then Encrid's. As Encrid dies, the assassin mocks his ability to anticipate the attack. Encrid's final thoughts are of the ferryman's mocking laughter before he wakes up again at the start of a new day. Determined to overcome the 'wall' of this loop, Encrid immediately seeks out Jaxon to trade for information regarding the Whistling Knives.
