The two travelers proceed to Cross Guard, noting that the city has reinforced its defenses with spikes in response to previous attacks. Upon arrival, Enkrid observes a tense atmosphere among the residents, characterized by wariness, anxiety, and curiosity. He is met at the gates by a snake-eyed administrative officer who has been alerted of the Border Guard Reserve Unit's arrival. Despite the officer's attempt to flatter him by recognizing his identity as a black-haired, blue-eyed knight, Enkrid remains casual and declines an invitation to the mayor's mansion, opting instead for an inn. The chapter ends as Enkrid arrives at a musty-smelling inn.
