Encrid observes a scarred, one-eyed man watching them from a corner table. After a meal of pork and apples, Encrid and Luagarne retire to their room. Luagarne complains about the poor quality of the water and the general state of the city. While sleeping, Encrid enters a mental encounter with the Ferryman. The Ferryman expresses offense at Encrid's earlier comparison of his eyes to the snake-eyed man's eyes and warns Encrid that he can still turn back. During the dialogue, Encrid realizes that the Ferryman communicates by imbuing meaning with Will. The encounter ends abruptly when Encrid is jolted awake by a sharp, smoky scent in the physical world. He discovers a brazier filled with sleep-inducing herbs has been placed in their room. Recognizing an ambush, Encrid uses hand signals to coordinate with Luagarne; she heads to the roof while he prepares to face the intruders. As Encrid opens the door, the scarred one-eyed man from the pub emerges, accompanied by several armed gamblers, expressing frustration that Encrid did not sleep peacefully.
