Rem, sensing Encrid's frustration, breaks formation to charge the beasts with his axes. Driven by instinct, Encrid abandons his spear and joins Rem, using his sword to efficiently slaughter the remaining wolves. Their display of skill is so remarkable that the platoon leader, rather than reprimanding them for breaking formation, assigns them to a more dangerous area where troublesome beasts have appeared. After a brief rest and sharing jerky with comrades, Encrid and Rem travel south to find an allied camp in uproar. They arrive to find a battlefield where Harpies—grotesque winged monsters—are attacking the 1st Company's heavy infantry. As a Harpy dives toward them, Encrid enters a state of heightened intuition, drawing his sword to meet the monster's descent.
