Chapter 1 — I Picked Up a Grimoire and Became a Wizard

Chapter 1

The chapter opens with the protagonist, a poor orphanage-raised philosophy student, complaining about expensive textbooks. He visits an old used bookstore run by a bespectacled old man and discovers a dark iron-bound grimoire called De Vermis Mysteriis. Despite its high price of 30,000 won, he buys it with card payment. On his way home through dark winter streets, he witnesses a horrifying attack where an invisible creature brutally kills a man who had shoved him earlier. He flees to an alley, catching his breath, when the invisible presence follows him. The creature licks his face like a playful puppy before the grimoire's pages flip open, revealing text about the Invisible Vampire familiar. The chapter ends with the protagonist realizing the grimoire has chosen him as its new owner.
