Chapter 28

In the 17th cycle, mc_narration (Undertaker) and Old Man Scho (Emit Schopenhauer) operate a fake academy to cultivate awakeners. When the World Tree appears, they gather guild leaders, including Dang Seo-rin (Dang Seo-rin) and the Sword Marquess (Hong Bi-cheong). They present a bound, zombie-like New Buddhist who gnaws his own flesh, missing limbs, and mumbling "Hungry." The infected human transforms: a red Udumbara flower blooms from his mouth, grows rapidly, and releases petals that float into the sky, joining a global spectacle of red light. The guild leaders recognize this as the return of Udumbara, a legendary, unstoppable anomaly parasitizing hosts. The mc_narration and Old Man Scho realize their previous strategies, including the 36th cycle's attempt to suppress cults and monitor awakeners with the Saintess (jeong_ye_ji), have failed to stop the inevitable bloom. They devised a plan to find the "first patient" by having the Saintess use [Clairvoyance] to monitor regions sequentially across Korea. After cycles 36–40 yielded no results, the 41st cycle identified the origin in Onyang, Chungcheongnam-do. Undertaker locates a decaying inn where a mother and infant lie dead from starvation. Red Udumbara flowers bloom from the mother’s shoulders and the infant’s prayer bracelet. The Saintess telepathically confirms the location. Undertaker destroys the flowers to prevent further infection. He notes that while he cannot save the victims, killing the blooms early in each cycle is a necessary, grim duty. In the 96th cycle, he brings Sim Ah-ryeon (Sim Ah-ryeon) to the site. She admires the beauty, asking about the flower. Undertaker cryptically calls it a flower that blooms every time he dies. Sim Ah-ryeon dismisses it as "middle school syndrome," ending the observation with a darkly humorous tone.
