This immortality turned the virus into a coveted blessing, leading to the rise of the New Buddha cult. Followers shaved their heads, allowing plants to grow in place of hair, and adopted floral names, forming the 'Hwadan' (Flower Garden) sect with the ideology 'Huayan.' While harmless to ordinary humans, the virus disabled the abilities of Awakeners, making it a deadly poison to them. In Korea, Constellations mitigated anti-Awakenersentiment, but abroad, where Awakeners held unchecked power, the New Buddha exploited public hatred, spreading globally and causing diplomatic crises, such as the collapse of volunteer support from Japan during the 'Ten Legs' threat. Oh Dok-seo reflects on previous cycles, noting how the New Buddha affected her companions: the Saintess grew a blue hydrangea, Sim Ah-ryeon a lily of the valley, Lee Ju-ho a sunflower, and Dang Seo-rin black violets. Dok-seo herself deliberately infected to discover her flower, which turned out to be a red spider lily. Fearing the loss of her regression ability, she typically ended her life upon suspecting infection. However, the situation escalates abruptly. Old Man Scho bursts into Oh Dok-seo’s room, warning her of an emergency. Upon looking out the window, Oh Dok-seo sees Yggdrasil, a massive red tree engulfing the night sky, signaling a catastrophic new event.
