Chapter 1

At a roadside inn, the storyteller Jangsam tells a drinking companion that villagers are exaggerating about a ten-year-old boy who killed a Bachelor Ghost and displayed its head on a gatepost. A mysterious woman with large ears and ash-gray skin—Mongryeon, a dokkaebi chief—interrupts, asking for directions to Subu Village. She pays Jangsam and departs, following the rumor on a whim. Arriving at the quiet farming village, she finds the Snail-Headed Scholar's head hanging as a tomb. Three looting villagers confront her, plundering the dead's belongings, but Mongryeon kills them with a snap of her fingers. She then heals the starving boy Ise at the grave, offers him a home, and learns he killed the demon using bamboo salt and a spear after studying its habits. Moved by his tragedy and talent, she promises him a peaceful life until he comes of age, asking him to grow strong and become a hunter. Ise calls her 'Chief,' and she reveals she is a dokkaebi, the day a human boy joined the land of the dokkaebi.
