Chapter 5 — The Tale of Cultivation and Demon Extermination

Chapter 5

A demon ambushes three young dokkaebi — Goegeol, Gong Ilchwi, and Gong Woljang — inside a demonic-qi barrier. Goegeol loses an arm and is later eaten by the Infant-Cry Dragon Horse. Ise, having tracked the demon with a Boundary-Seeking Talisman, arrives, tears open the barrier with his Realm-Rending Sword, and evacuates the two surviving twins, taking the dragon horse's attacks on his shield to buy them time. He escapes outside the barrier, badly injured. Goecheon and two other dokkaebi guards arrive responding to the signal flare; Ise reports that Goegeol is dead and the twins are safe. Goecheon carries the unconscious Ise away while the enraged dragon horse gives chase, clamping the two dokkaebi in its mouth as it pursues them through the night.
