Chapter 3 — I Picked Up a Grimoire and Became a Wizard

Chapter 3

Kim Yo-han attends a university lecture to fill his attendance credit but cannot focus on the professor's class. He researches the grimoire De Vermis Mysteriis, learning its vampire predates the aristocratic Dracula image and is linked to the Cthulhu Mythos figure Abdul Alhazred, who was devoured by an invisible monster. During attendance, the professor singles out Yo-han and scolds the class for missing textbooks. Suddenly the Invisible Vampire reveals itself and kills the professor, tearing out his neck. Yo-han flees to a restroom stall as the lecture hall erupts in screams. Realizing the creature hunts by hunger, he goes to a butcher shop and buys pork, chicken, and beef with his part-time savings. He feeds the meat to the vampire, adds milk to soften it, and the creature devours it gratefully. Yo-han laughs in relief and absurdity, then throws the grimoire on the floor in despair as its pages reveal planetary days, Solomon's magic, pentagrams, and Ars Paulina—far from the fireballs and chain lightning he had imagined.
