Chapter 42 — Regression Is Too Much

Chapter 42

Kim Jun-ho completes a simple candle-cutting task to receive a silver sigil from a blacksmith, learning that rewards are based on the highest grade possessed. Noticing the ease of obtaining silver sigils and the suspicious presence of bronze sigil holders, he investigates the streets. He observes desperate citizens trying to bribe or plead with an unnamed beggar for information, reinforcing his suspicion that hidden powers lurk among the lower ranks. Deciding to pursue a gold sigil, he visits a grand mansion and meets Baron Licht. The noble explains that the city's residents entered the Tower through faith in God and are overseen by the Master of the City. To earn a gold sigil, Licht demands that Jun-ho kidnap a young fish seller named Emily, exploiting a loophole that permits violence between climbers and residents. Jun-ho finds the request deeply suspicious, suspecting the Tower is manipulating his actions.
